Dental Care for Veterans
Sayyar Family Dentistry looks after veterans and military families from across Glen Allen, Richmond, Petersburg and Fort Lee. Whether your treatment is covered by VA dental benefits, by a VADIP dental plan, or paid for privately, we will tell you what applies and what it costs before any work begins.
How we look after veterans
Understanding your VA dental options
VA dental care is narrower than most people expect. Eligibility is decided by VA — never by a dental office — and depends on factors such as a service-connected dental condition, a 100% disability rating, former prisoner-of-war status, or enrollment in particular VA programs. Where you do qualify, that care is provided or authorized by VA directly.
Many veterans who do not qualify for VA-provided dental care buy a plan through the VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP), which offers private dental coverage at reduced group rates to veterans enrolled in VA health care, or they use a plan through work or a spouse. Those plans can generally be used at a private practice like ours. If you are unsure which category you fall into, the official answer comes from VA — call 1-877-222-8387 or read the dental care pages at va.gov — and then call us and we will work out what it means for the treatment you actually need.
Easy to reach from Petersburg, Fort Lee and Richmond
We are at 5231 Hickory Park Drive, Suite E in Glen Allen, just off I-95 north of Richmond and a straight run up the interstate from Petersburg and Fort Lee. Parking is free and directly outside. We are open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 5:00 and Friday mornings from 8:00 to 1:00, so an early appointment can be done without giving up a whole day.
Frequently asked questions
Do you accept VA dental benefits? +
If VA has authorized dental care for you in the community, bring that authorization to your appointment and we will tell you straight away whether we are able to treat you under it. If you have VADIP or another private dental plan, we can verify your benefits and file the claim on your behalf. What no dental office can do is decide your eligibility — that is VA's call, and it is worth settling before you make the trip.
I do not qualify for VA dental care. What are my options? +
You are in the same position as most veterans, and it is not a dead end. VADIP plans are open to veterans enrolled in VA health care or CHAMPVA, and we accept most private dental insurance. Without insurance you still get a full written fee before treatment starts — the price we quote is the price you pay.
Can you treat a dental problem connected to my service? +
Clinically, yes — a cracked tooth, an infection or gum disease is treated the same way whatever its history. Whether VA will pay for that treatment at a private office is a separate question that depends on your authorization, and we would rather be straight with you about it on the phone than after you have driven out to us.
Do you see military families as well as veterans? +
Yes — spouses, children and retirees are all welcome, from a first check-up at age one to implants later in life. Bring whichever dental plan you have and we will verify what it covers before we begin.
